The United States was born when a few brave souls decided that freedom and liberty were worth risking their lives for, and our armed forces continue to stand up for those values today.
In fact, just a few days before Independence Day 2017, United States Marines in Syria rained artillery down on Islamic State group terrorists.
A video of the awesome display was posted to Facebook on July 1 and by July 5 had already garnered more than 473,000 views.
“Marines in Syria show why artillery is the king of battle,” the video’s caption read on the U.S. Marine Corp’s Facebook page.
Nearly 400 Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed to Syria for almost two months to support the U.S. backed Syrian Democratic Forces in their assault on the Islamic State group’s de facto capital of Raqqa, according to The Daily Caller.
They were joined by several hundred other U.S.-supported special operators in order to train, advise and assist Kurdish and Syrian Arab forces on the ground.
During the deployment, the unit fired roughly 4,500 artillery rounds — an average of nearly 100 rounds per day — as part of a larger bombardment of Islamic State fighters that included 25 airstrikes.
Maj. Craig Thomas explained that it was an “ongoing operation,” according to the Marine Corps Times.
“We have another Marine unit that’s there – to my knowledge, they have not released that name, so we’ll let (Operation Inherent Resolve) do that,” Thomas said. “It’s not exactly an established theater as Iraq or Afghanistan was.”
Lt. Col. John Gianopoulos, the unit’s operations officer, said the Marines were prepared for the task.
“They studied what they were going into,” he explained. “The Marines went into there were staffed with the right security elements, the right mobility, the right logistics, the right intel to be able to move around that battle space, successfully provide artillery fire and contribute to the mission.”
We couldn’t be more proud of our Marines for bravely defending freedom and showing these terrorists why they shouldn’t mess with the U.S. or our allies.
