Students Sick After Pro-Choice Prof Mixes Aborted Babies and Porn…

Absolutely sick.

A pro-choice Purdue University professor who participated in a debate over the morality of abortion has caused quite a stir after he said that showing pictures of aborted fetuses to bring home the reality of the abortion procedure was “child pornography.”

According to TheBlaze, Dr. David Sanders is an associate biology professor at the West Lafayette, Indiana, university. In an April 24 debate at the school, he was pitted against Seth Drayer of the pro-life group Created Equal.

It didn’t take long for Sanders to make himself an extremely controversial figure.

Dr. Sanders began his side of the speech by offering some interesting thoughts on theology.

You’ll note that I used the word interesting and not intelligent; when you hear someone who has enough post-graduate work to qualify for the honorific “Dr.” offer up jaw-dropping ruminations like “the Bible does not tell you that abortion is murder” and that since some “conception acts don’t lead to a viable fetus, that makes God the greatest abortionist,” you’ll understand why.

Sanders later addressed Drayer, saying that, “He thinks fetuses are children, and he belongs to an organization that likes to show images of fetuses.”

“What would you call the public display of a butt-naked body of a child?” Sanders told the audience. “I would call that child pornography.”

“Do they have their permission? Do they have the permission of the fetus? Obviously not. Do they have the permission of the parents to show these images of children? Naked children?”

But wait, isn’t that a tacit admission the fetus is a child? Don’t worry about that lapse of judgement, since Sanders certainly didn’t.

“I didn’t admit it,” Sanders said when he was called on the contradiction. “I was using (Drayer’s) language. He thinks it’s a child. I do not … if you want to enforce and protect First Amendment rights to allow you to show child pornography, have at it.”

Here’s the full debacle, if you wish to experience it in its total context. We warn you, it doesn’t get much better:

While the proceedings are lent an air of levity by Dr. Sanders’ inexplicable haberdashery choice (it’s a bit difficult to take seriously the ramblings of a pedagogue dressed like an aging hipster going to a Wilco concert), Sanders’ remarks were deadly serious in a number of ways.

What Sanders tried to do is delegitimize anyone who wants to communicate the full horror of the abortion procedure and the fact that fetuses are more than a “clump of cells.” Furthermore, any religious argument is irrelevant to Sanders because God is an “abortionist.”

I’d love to hear him give that argument to a Christian family that’s suffered a miscarriage. Something tells me his language would be significantly less glib.

Yes, the Bible doesn’t specifically address the modern procedure of abortion for reasons that should have been stunningly obvious to Sanders. However, it’s surprising that a career academic who (I’m going to give him an unearned plaudit here) got where he is by assiduous study didn’t bother cracking open what’s arguably the world’s least-obscure text to ascertain the validity of his argument.

He probably should have. I don’t think I need to recapitulate that the Bible says God isn’t terribly jazzed about the taking of innocent life. However, there are numerous passages which explicitly indicate this extends to the unborn:

  • “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. ” (Psalm 139:13)
  • “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!’ … As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.” (Luke 1:41-44
  • “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5)

And that’s hardly even digging. Psalm 139 is to the Book of Psalms what “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” is to the Rolling Stones; even Easter-and-Christmas Christians are pretty familiar with it. Luke 1 isn’t exactly a Biblical b-side, either. I’m amazed Sanders could receive a doctorate, deign to speak on abortion and the Bible, and yet have zero idea about the import of any of these passages. To speak in Biblical metaphor, it indicates that he hasn’t cast his net of knowledge all that widely.

Either way, Sanders’ rant was insulting to Christians, pro-lifers and the intelligence of everyone in the room.

I wouldn’t deny him the ability to speak his mind on a college campus, of course. I’m not a liberal. He has every right to rant about “butt-naked” aborted children and to compare pro-lifers to child pornographers. By doing so, he’s done a great deal more disservice to his side than my own.

I just think it’s ironic this gravely undereducated individual somehow isn’t a problem in an academic debate, but Ben Shapiro and Ann Coulter must be physically prevented from speaking on campuses at all costs.
