This is fantastic!
The internet melted when the world’s greatest Olympian revealed his next race opponent is anything but human. Michael Phelps will return to the water at the end of July to face his greatest opponent yet: a shark.
According to The Washington Post, the five-time Olympian will face off against the shark in a race that is set to be featured on Discovery Channel’s ragingly popular “Shark Week.”
While the details aren’t clear as to how exactly this race will be organized or what type of shark he’ll face, it’s been billed as a monumental event like no other. In anticipation of the event, Discovery released a statement this week to tease its fans of the greatness to come.
“They are one of the fastest and most efficient predators on the planet: Sharks. He is our greatest champion to ever get in the water: Michael Phelps. 39 world records. 23 Olympic golds. But he has one competition left to win,” the statement teased.
“An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before. The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark — the race is on,” Discovery concluded.
NBCSports reported the race has been dubbed “Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White” and will open “Shark Week” programming on July 23 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
Discovery will wrap up the week with “Shark School with Michael Phelps” on July 30 at 8 p.m. Eastern, in which Phelps will dive with hammerheads.

This won’t be Phelps’ first time in the water with the ocean’s most ominous predator. He recently posted a photo on Instagram showing a great white swimming past a diving cage suspended underneath him with the caption, “I was able to do something that I had always wanted to do.”
Stay tuned, America. One of the world’s most popular athletes and one of its most dangerous predators, just might provide the biggest shock of the year.
