The NYT has officially destroyed any shred of credibility it had left.
The New York Times ran an editorial this week so duplicitous in nature that it elicited outrage from its leading comrade and fellow traveler in the liberal media.
Published Wednesday, the dishonest op-ed by the leftist paper’s entire editorial board falsely linked the mass shooting six years ago by deranged shooter Jared Lee Loughner to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
“(W)hen (he) opened fire in a supermarket parking lot, grievously wounding Representative Gabby Giffords and killing six people, including a 9-year-old girl, the link to political incitement was clear,” the Times claimed. “Before the shooting, Sarah Palin’s political action committee circulated a map of targeted electoral districts that put Ms. Giffords and 19 other Democrats under stylized cross hairs.”
Except that this narrative pushed by the liberal media’s top newspaper was such bull that even The Washington Post felt compelled to publicly reject it.
“(T)his episode showed how pervasive this debunked talking point still is on the political left, and we wanted to set the record straight,” the Post’s fact-checker, Michelle Ye Hee Lee, noted in a report Thursday in which she explained that “(i)t’s unclear whether Loughner even knew of Palin’s map” and that “it probably would not have changed the outcome.”
According to Lee, “Loughner had no clear political views” and was simply “a troubled man who abused alcohol and drugs, and whose mental illness was apparent to his classmates and family even before he was diagnosed as schizophrenic during his court trial.”
The Times eventually issued a correction later in the week, and while Lee wrote that she appreciated this gesture, she rightly pointed out that “it’s not a good sign that the debunked talking point was included as fact in the editorial of a major media outlet.”
Agreed. For an outlet that purports to be a purveyor of truth, The Times has a tendency to flub the facts when it’s politically convenient to do so. So does The Post, for that matter, but in this instance it hit the nail on the head.
Mind you, it wasn’t just fellow liberals whom the Times’ editorial board enraged. Palin herself responded with a scathing rebuke on Facebook and has reportedly been considering filing a libel suit against Times.
Given the publisher’s history of lies, we can only hope she does indeed proceed with a suit.
