He drops some truth bombs!
Double-amputee, Army veteran and Florida Republican Rep. Brian Mast took to the House floor on Thursday to defend the Republican health care bill and in the process, excoriated Democrats and their criticisms of the bill.
According to the Washington Free Beacon, Mast strode to the lectern and defended the health care bill against claims from Democrats that it would repeal the Obamacare provision that covers pre-existing conditions.
“I, too, am a person with pre-existing conditions, and I believe it’s not just something I should do, it’s a responsibility for me to be the staunchest advocate for people out there that have pre-existing conditions,” Mast said. “And that is why I am such an ardent supporter of this bill.”
Under the bill, The Daily Caller reports that states could indeed ask for a waiver that would allow insurers to raise premiums for people with pre-existing conditions. However, the bill also includes an $8 billion fund “to ensure a strong safety net and reduce premiums, or other out-of-pocket costs, for those with pre-existing conditions.”
Mast went on to explain that, in reality, Obamacare provides even less coverage for pre-exising conditions because many states have seen a significant decrease in insurers who participate in the exchanges. Some states have zero.
“I think every American and every person out there with pre-existing conditions should be asking themselves, how is it that they have coverage if every single insurance provider has pulled out of the market?” Mast said. “If there’s no entity to go out there to provide insurance, how could pre-existing conditions possibly be covered?”
Mast went on to question the Democrats’ credibility when it comes to health care and stated that it’s the same people — Democrats — who made empty promises about Obamacare to get it passed in 2010 who are perpetuating the lies about the current bill.
And Mast, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, a congressman who lost both his legs to an improvised explosive device while serving with the Army in Afghanistan, hit the Democrats hard.
“It is the exact same group of people that went out there and lied to the face of every single American, telling them if they like their plan they would keep their plan, if they like their doctor they could keep their doctor, that the average American family would save $2,500 or more on health insurance,” he said.
Referring to the liberal promise that under Obamacare, Americans could keep their existing coverage or doctor, Mast called it all lies.
“That was a bold-faced lie, and it was orchestrated by architects who went out with the intention to prey on the American people,” Mast continued. “That is who’s going out there selling these lies against my party.”
Unlike the Democrats criticizing the bill, Mast has the credibility to speak on this issue. In 2010, he was injured in Afghanistan when he stepped on an IED. As a double-amputee with pre-existing conditions, he is a hero in Congress for all Americans as he advocates for a reformed health care system.
While it’s certainly not a perfect solution to the veritable mess that is Obamacare, the new bill is a positive step in the right direction for the American people. With cooperation across the aisle, the President Trump and Congress are sure to find a better solution.
