After a homophobic joke directed at President Donald Trump by CBS’ Stephen Colbert, even legendary quarterback Joe Namath had to say enough to the madness.
Monday’s rant by Colbert was in response to a comment made by Trump in an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation” that aired this weekend.
“I love your show. I call it ‘Deface the Nation,’” Trump said. “But, you know, your show is sometimes not exactly correct.”
That was apparently impetus enough for Colbert to break out in a tirade that included homophobic slurs.
“(Face the Nation host) John Dickerson has way too much dignity to trade insults with the president of the United States to his face. But I, sir, am no John Dickerson,” Colbert said. “When you insult one member of the CBS family, you insult us all. Bazinga.
“Mr. President, I love your presidency, I call it ‘Disgrace the Nation,’” he continued. “You’re not the POTUS, you’re the ‘gloat-us.’ You’re the glutton with the button. You’re a regular ‘Gorge Washington.’ You’re the ‘presi-dunce,’ but you’re turning into a real ‘pr***-tator.’
“In fact, the only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c*** holster,” Colbert said.
Homophobia: now entirely okay so long as the target is conservative. Good to know!
In an appearance on “The Fox News Specialists,” Namath decried Colbert’s tactics.
“That’s not cool, I didn’t like it at all,” Namath said, calling it “a real reach to be funny and he dropped the ball, man.”
Check out Namath’s reaction here, along with Fox contributors Katherine Trimpf, Eboni Williams and Karl Rove.
When even Joe Namath is jumping into the fray, you know things aren’t good. But what do you expect? Colbert’s remarks were some of the coarsest and most hateful things I’ve seen on TV in a while — far worse than cracking a joke about “Deface the Nation.”
And yet, what will happen from Colbert’s friends in the media? Probably nothing. If a conservative made this remark, they’d be off the air faster than they could say “double standard.” And yet, Colbert has received almost no pushback from this.
Thankfully, we think he’s going to lose more than a few viewers.
