Canadian Landlord Commits “Shoe Offense” Against Muslims, Faces Chilling Fate

A Canadian human rights tribunal has ordered an Ontario landlord to pay $12,000 to a Muslim couple who two years ago rented the main floor of his Brampton home.

The landlord, John Alabi, refused to remove his shoes when he showed their bedroom to prospective new tenants. He also allegedly failed to provide them with a heads-up before the showings, according to the Toronto Sun.

“(They) were merely making simple requests for the accommodation of their religious practices,” vice chair Jo-Anne Pickel of the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario ruled in defense of the couple’s demands. “Their requests easily could have been met without any hardship to the respondent, let alone any undue hardship as that term is used in human rights law.”

According to the Sun, this ridiculous debacle began shortly after Walid Madkour and his wife, Heba Ismail, moved into Alabi’s apartment in December of 2014. Due to what the paper described as “several disputes,” the two parties agreed to terminate the lease two months later.

“In the meantime, Alabi tried to rent out the unit,” the Sun reported. “Madkhour wanted a one-hour notification of any showing in addition to the 24-hour notice. Alabi told him that by law, only 24 hours was necessary. Madkhour accused him of ‘racism and violation of our civil rights.’”

The landlord reportedly replied by texting, “Welcome to Ontario, Canada.”

He later said that hemeant to imply that apartment viewing rules in Ontario differ from those in Quebec, where the couple previously lived, but Madkhour took this the wrong way. Faced with not getting exactly what he desired, the Muslim man basically turned into just another sniveling, entitled victim.

And then later that same evening, when Alabi tried to shovel the snow outside his own apartment, the Muslim couple again tried to play the victim card, claiming that the noise from the shoveling was intimidating and frightening.

Couple this with Alabi refusing to remove his shoes in his own home and allegedly posting a status update on Facebook mocking Muslims, and well, it’s not hard to see why the tribunal ruled against him — not because he did anything wrong, but because, according to some conservatives, such tribunals function as “kangaroo courts,” The Daily Caller said.

In other words, they prioritize the petulant feelings of the perpetually aggrieved — who often are Muslims — over the actual law.

“When considered together, I find that the comment ‘Welcome to Ontario, Canada,’ the making of loud pounding noises outside the applicants’ door shortly after making that comment, and (Alabi)’s refusal to remove his shoes when entering (their) prayer space amounted to harassment under the code,” Pickel concluded.

Congratulations, Ms. Pickel, you’re officially a hack activist “judge.”
